| Term | Definition |

| Federalism | The central government shares power with smaller state governments. |
| Checks and Balances | Branches of the government have controls over other branches to ensure that no one branch gets too powerful. |
| Republicanism | The right to vote for Representatives. |
| Separation of Powers | Separating the government into branches that make, enforce or interpret laws. |
| Individual Rights | The people's individual rights and freedoms. |
| Limited Government | No one is above the law. |
| Popular Sovereignty | The people rule. |
