| character vs. character | conflict that occurs between two characters |
| character vs. self | internal conflicts that a character experiences |
| character vs. society | conflict that occurs between a character and rules, laws, or social norms |
| character vs. nature | conflict that occurs when a character faces hurricane, tsunami, earthquake, etc. |
| antagonist | character that prevents the main character from succeeding |
| author's craft | author's choice of words, details, and use of literary elements |
| character traits | qualities that a character possesses that tells you about his/her personality |
| climax | part of the plot that is the most exciting where the protagonist makes a decision |
| dramatic irony | when the audience or readers know something that the characters don't |
| exposition | part of the plot that introduces the setting, characters, and main problem in the story |
| falling action | part of the plot directly after the main character makes a decision |
| figurative language | alliteration, allusion, hyperbole, idioms, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, and simile |
| first-person | a character in the book tells the story from his/her point of view |
| foreshadowing | clues or hints the author gives the reader about what will happen later in the book |
| internal conflict | conflict that happens inside a character's mind |
| plot | made up of the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution |
| protagonist | character in the story the readers want to see succeed |
| resolution | part of the plot that wraps up the story |
| rising action | part of the plot that where things start to get complicated for the protagonist; it becomes more difficult for the protagonist to reach his/her goal |
| situational irony | when a situation turns out to be the opposite of what is expected |
| third person limited | when a narrator tells the story and the thoughts and feelings of one character |
| third person omniscient | when a narrator tells the story and the thoughts and feelings of all characters |
| third person objective | when a narrator tells the story, but does not tell the thoughts and feelings of any of the characters |
| verbal irony | when a character says something that he/she does not mean; sarcasm |
| tone | the author's feelings, or attitude, toward the subject |
| mood | how the reader feels as he/she is reading |
