What is a team A unit of two or more people who interact and coordinate their work to accomplish a specific goal. *2 or more, regular interaction, share a performance goal
Group and Team different Team implies sense of shared mission and collective responsibility
Formal Teams Created by the organization as part of the formal organization structure.
Vertical Team composed of a manager and his or her subs in the organizations' formal chain of command. Functional team or command team. ie. Engineering, Finance, or night nurse team with a leader
Horizontal Team Composed of employees from about the same hierarchical level but from different areas of expertise. Given a special task. Maybe disbanded after. ie Cross functional teams (task force) and committes. Create a new product, new curriculm
Team Q: Several views need to be considered. Tasks are best served with a horizontal, cross functional team.
Committe Long lived and may be a permanent part of the organization's structure. Membership decided by title or position rather than personal epxertise. Committee needs official representation Vs. cross functional team ..personal quals for solving problems.
Special Purpose Team Project Teams. outside formal organization structure to undertake a project of special importance or creativitiy. Focus on a specific purpose and expect to disband once completed. irobot, thinkpad, RAZR. Speed up dev cycle or fast cycle project
Problem Solving Team 5-23 hourly employees from teh same department who voluntarily meet to discuss improving Quality, efficiency and work envior. Recs proposed to mngment. Quality circles used by japan.
Self Directed Teams 1. Emplyees feel challenged, work meanginful, sense of identity with company. 2. Consisting of 5-20 multiskilled workers who rotate to produce product or service, supervised by elected member. Teams take responsiblity minimum supervision.
Virtual Team A team made up of members who are geographically or organizationaly dispersed.Rarely meet F2F, use mediated technology. Select right, manage socialization, foster trust, effectively manage communication.
Team size Book was big fan of smaller teams. 3-6 recent poll said. Small 2-5 Large 10 (His hint was 7 should be on a team!??)
Free rider Person who beenfits from team membership but does not make proportionate contribution to team. Free loader.
Team Cohesiveness Teh extent to which team members are attracted to the team and motivated to remain in it. Members of highly cohesive teams are comittted, attend, happy...
Determinants of Team Cohesiveness Team interaction: more interaction and more time spent -M cohesive (MC) Shared Goals: Agreeing on purpose direction MC Personal attraction to team: members have simliar attitudes values, enjoy eachother. Competition MC & Favorable Eval of team outsider
Consequences of Team Cohesiveness Morale: HIGHER uniformly effects from MC Productivity: Mixed results. Uniformity is produced. but higher productivty depends on relationship with mgmnt. TF MC does not necccessary lead to higher productivity!
Conflict Antagonistic interactin in which one party attempts to thwart the intentions or goals of another. *Goal is to bring to surface and address *Virtual teams have more conflict
Groupthink Tendency for peole to be so committed to a cohesive team that they are reluctant to express contrary opinion. Conflict can prevent groupthink and be a positive thing.
Causes of Conflict Scarce Resources: $, info, supplies.teams must compete for resources -> conflict Communication Breakdown:poor comm. Personality Clashes: differences in personality,values,attitudes. Goal Differences:people pursuing conflicting goals. Salesperson's targ
