STAAR Word Work

STAAR Vocab for Dictionary Skills, Context Clues

TermDefinition
Dictionary A book that gives the meaning of words
Definition A statement that tells what a word means
Match Something that is similar or exactly like something else
Meaning The definition of a word
Context Clues Words in a text that help the reader figure out the meaning of another word
Guide Words The words at the top of each page in the dictionary that lets you know which words can be found on that page
Entry Words a word in boldface type that is being explained in a dictionary
Synonyms Words that mean about the same
Root Word The base word before any prefixes or suffixes are added
Prefix A word part added to the beginning of a word, in front of the root word, that changes the meaning of the word slightly
Suffix A word part added to the end of a word, after the root word, that changes the meaning of the word slightly
Antonyms Words that have opposite meanings
