| physical change | a change in which no new materials form |
| chemical change | a change in which one or more new types of matter form |
| thermal energy | the energy of moving particles that make up all matter |
| insulator | a material that heat does not pass through easily |
| conductor | a material through which heat can move easily |
| substance | a particular kind of matter or material |
| property | a characteristic of a substance that can be used to describe it |
| conservation of mass | you can't just make new matter or make matter disappear; the total amount of matter (mass) always stays the same, even if it changes form |
| vanish | to disappear from sight |
| dissolve | to mix completely with a liquid |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| expand | to become larger or wider |
| contract | to become smaller |
