Unit 5 Energy Vocabulary Terms

| Energy | The ability to do work or cause something to change. |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change forms or be transferred. |
| Open System | A system that interacts with its surroundings. |
| Closed System | A system that can change energy, but not matter, with its surroundings. |
| Electricity | The continuous flow of electric charges through a conductor. |
| Electron | A negatively charged particle located outside the atoms nucleus. |
| Electric Curcuit | A closed path through which an electric current flows or may flow. |
| Electric Current | A flow of electric charge. |
| Voltage | The difference in electrical potential energy between two places in a circuit. |
| Resistance | The measurement of how difficult it is for charges to flow through a material. |
| Electromagnetic Spectrum | The range of the seven types of waves that carry energy as electricity and magnetism. |
| Medium | A substance which a wave travels. |
| Wave Speed | The speed of a wave is determined when both frequency and wavelength are known. S= f • λ |
| Wave | A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without requiring matter to move the entire distance. |
