Weather Study Stack

QuestionAnswer
All weather is a result of unequal heating of the Earth.
Warm air rises, cool air sinks
Warm air hold more moisture than cool air
Rising air __________ and ___________________. expands and cools
Winds blow from high to low pressure
Rising air means _______________________ and sinking air means ________________. Rising air is low pressure, Sinking air is high pressure
All weather occurs in a layer of the atmosphere called the troposphere
The atmosphere is made mainly of what 2 gases? Nitrogen and Oxygen
What is the name of the instrument used to measure air pressure? a barometer
What type of weather is associated with a low pressure system? warm temps, cloudy skies, and rain
What type of weather is associated with a high pressure system? cooler temps, clear skies, and sunny
Why does WARM air rise? Because it is less dense
Why does COOL air sink? Because it is more dense
How are air masses named? By where they come from
A continental polar air mass would be dry and cold
A maritime tropical air mass would be wet and warm
Why do all fronts bring rain? Because all fronts cause air to rise and rising air is the rain machine!
What type of front produces hard rain, thick clouds, and cooling temps after the front has passed? COLD FRONT
What type of front produces drizzle, thin clouds, and warming temps after the front has passed? WARM FRONT
How does a greenhouse work? The glass of the greenhouse allows the ultraviolet rays to get in but stops the infrared waves from getting out. The infrared waves are heat waves.
Describe the 4 steps of the water cycle. 1. Water starts out in oceans and rivers. 2. It enters the atmosphere through the processes of evaporation and transpiration. 3. Water vapor condenses in the sky to form clouds and rain. 4. The rain returns to oceans and rivers.
What are the rules for reading pressure off of a station model? If the number is less than 500 put a 10 in front of the number and a decimal point before the last number. If the number is 500 or more put a 9 in front of the number and a decimal point before the last number.
The pressure ON THE station model says 976. What is the actual pressure? 997.6
The pressure ON THE station model says 154. What is the actual pressure? 1015.4
How do we show cloudy skies on a station model? Fill in the whole circle
How do we show partly cloudy skies on a station model? Fill in half of the circle
How do we show wind direction on the station model? Draw a line coming off the circle in that direction.
How do we show wind speed on the station model? We draw feathers on the line. Whole feathers = 10 knots Half feathers = 5 knots
Remember that on the test you are not given any leading statements to help you with the 6 Weather Principles. Can you name all six??????? 1. All weather is a result of unequal heating. 2. Warm air rises, cools air sinks. 3. Winds always blow from H to L. 4. Rising air expands and cools. 5. Warm air holds more water than cold. 6. Rising air= low pressure, sinking air = high pressure.
