Chapter 4 Vocabulary

What is a plane mirror? A mirror that has a flat surface; reflection is right side up; image is same size; virtual image
What is a concave mirror? A mirror that is curved inward; like inside of spoon; forms virtual and real images
What is a convex mirror? A mirror that curves outward; like back of spoon; forms virtual image; image is right side up and smaller than original object
What is a lens? A transparent that forms an image by refracting or bending light
What is a convex lens? A lens that is thicker in the middle than at the edges; forms a virtual image and a real image
What is a concave lens? A lens that is thinner in the middle than at the edges; only forms a virtual image
What is nearsightedness? It happens when a person's eye is too long
What is farsightedness? It happens when a person's eye is too short
What is a laser? A device that produces intense light of only one color and wavelength
What is a hologram? A piece of film that produces a three dimensional image of an object
