Energy Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Law of Conservation of Energy | states that the total energy of an isolated system remains constant |
| wavelength | the distance between one peak and the next in a wave, or between one trough and the next |
| amplitude | height or "strength" of a wave |
| frequency | the number of waves that pass a given point during a specified period of time |
| reflection | a change in the direction of a wave when it hits a barrier and bounces back |
| refraction | a change in the direction and velocity which occurs when a seismic or electromagnetic wave travels from one material into another of different density, state, or elasticity |
| volume | the amount of space that an object occupies, measured in liters or centimeters cubed |
| pitch | the perceived frequency of a sound wave |
| electromagnetic wave | a wave that can transport its energy through a vacuum |
| conduction | the transfer of heat energy within an object, or between objects that are directly touching each other, due to collisions between the particles in the objects |
| convection | the transfer of heat from one place to another caused by movement of molecules |
| radiation | a process by which energetic electromagnetic waves move from one place to another |
| law of reflection | a statement in optics: when light falls upon a plane surface it is so reflected that the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence and that the incident ray, reflected ray, and normal ray all lie in the plane of incidence. |
| law of refraction | formula used to describe the relationship between the angles of incidence and refraction, when referring to light or other waves passing through a boundary between two different isotropic media, such as water, glass, or air. |
