| Side out | occurs when the team not serving wins the rally. When a team earns a side out, the rotate clockwise one position |
| Serve | initiated from anywhere behind the endline. A play has 5 seconds to serve. |
| ACE | server that hits the floor in bounds without anyone touching it or it hits a player and is not returnable |
| Rally | continuous play of the ball over the net, ending in a point or a side out |
| Forearm pass | bump, usually the first hit taken to receive serve or to receive a hard driven spike |
| Spike | hard driven that is used primarily as an offensive weapon used to score points |
| Kill | spike that ends the play in a point or a side out |
| Block | defensive move used to stop a spike from coming over the net |
| Dig | defensive move or a one-armed desperation play to save a spike from hitting the floor |
| Dink | offensive move in which the ball is put over the block and drops quickly to the floor |
| Free ball | easy return from the opponents when a spike cannot be attempted |
