| DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION | when the narrator TELLS the reader about a character |
| INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION | when the reader learns about a character from speech and actions |
| SETTING | the time and place |
| FLASHBACK | when the narrator returns to an event that happened previously in the past |
| THEME | a truth about life |
| MOOD | emotions created in the reader |
| TONE | the attitude of the author or speaker |
| FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW | when a character tells the story; uses the pronoun "I" |
| THIRD PERSON LIMITED | details are limited to one character's viewpoint; uses third person pronouns such as "he," "she," and "they" |
| THIRD PERSON OMNISCIENT | the narrator is all-knowing |
| IRONY | contrast between two opposite ideas |
| SIMILE | comparison using "like" or "as" |
| PERSONIFICATION | giving human qualities to an animal, object, or idea |
