TermDefinition
Tragedy A story in which the noble main character fails or dies because of a personal flaw or a twist of fate
Tragic hero The main character of a tragedy
Character foil A character whose personality contrasts with – and thus highlights – the personality of another character
Word play Any clever use of the double meanings or matching sounds of words
Blank verse Unrhymed verse in which each line has five stressed syllabus, each one usually preceded by an unstressed syllable
Soliloquy A speech in which a character alone on stage “thinks aloud” to himself for herself
Aside A private remark that a character on stage makes to the audience or to another character but that is not heard by other characters on stage
Paraphrase To restate in one’s own words what someone else said or wrote.
Critical review A piece of writing that evaluates the ideas or artistic qualities of another work
Protagonist Central character, dies or fails, high rank/status
Antagonist Force working against protagonist (another character, group or something nonhuman)
Dramatic Irony When the audience knows more than the characters – helps build suspense
Comic relief Comic relief consists of humorous scenes, incidents, or speeches hat are included in a serious drama to provide a reduction in emotional intensity.
Pun (noun) A joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings.
