| nonrenewable resources | materials from the environment that people use that cannot be replaced |
| inexhaustible resources | an energy source that cannot be used up |
| fossil fuels | a fuel formed from the decay of ancient forms of life (oil, coal, petroleum, natural gas-methane, propane, butane) |
| alternative energy source | a source of energy other than the burning of a fossil fuel |

| cost-effectiveness | a measure determined by comparing the costs and the consequences of different ways of doing something |
| conservation | saving, protecting, or using natural resources wisely |
| biomass | resource that comes from living, or recently living organisms |
| hydrogen fuel | hydrogen gas burned as an energy source |

| reuse | to use something again |
| recycle | to make new objects or materials from old objects or materials |
| solar energy | inexhaustible supply of energy from the Sun |
| wind energy | inexhaustible supply of energy from the atmosphere's moving air (powered by the Sun) |
