Many of the synthetic medications comes from plants and herbs (ex: digoxin-foxglove plant, which is used to cure dropsy)
Dropsy is also known as CHF ( Congestive Heart Failure)
Herbal medicine is the use of plant and herbs for mediscinal purposes.Do not use chemicals to extract the active ingredients.
Herbal remedies are used today by individuals who doesnt want to take synthetic medications
There are herbal medicine experts that are called natropathetic or homeopathic medicine
Dosage forms available are tinctures, extracts, tablets/capsules, teas, lozenges, ointments, salves, and rubs
to make tinctures we boil herbs and process them with alcohol; makes a liquid form ex: St.John's Wort
to make extracts we boil herbs and it becomes a liquid
to make tablets/capsules we use dried herbs and crush them
to make teas we use the leaves and the flowers that are dried and crushed
to make lozenges we boil and press into a mold; you suck these ex: zinc lozenges
to make ointments,slaves, and rubs we take herbs before they dry them and press them and then process them; used topically ex: Arnacia
Aloe Vera There are over 300 species of aloe. the aloe vera are most commonly used in the U.S. the inside of the leaf is what's used.
aloe vera is used externallly for minor burns, wounds, and bruises
aloe vera side effects are There are NO proven interactions, but suggest that you use caution when taking anticoagulants.
Too much aloe vera internally can create diahrrea
aloe vera warning is if you are allergic to aloe vera or a member of the aloe family then do not use
aloe vera is used internally for aiding in digestion and constipation
Billberry has been used fo rover 1,000 years in European medicine. Grows in NOrth America, Europe, and Northern Asia.It is a relative of the blueberry family and they use the fruit
Billberry is used to treat diahrrea,menstrual cramps, eye problems.velcrois veins, venus insufficiency ( condition where the veins does not efficiently return blood from the legs to the heart) and other circulatory problems
The leaves of the billberry plant can be used for diabetes
Side effects of billberry are NO proven interactions, buit do not use wi th anticoagulant therapy
Warning of billberry too much can be toxic causing toxicity
Chamomile there are 2 types used for health conditions and they are Roman chamomile and German chamomile( used commomnly)
Chamomile is used fo ra variety of reasons such as insomnia, anxiety, and GI problems such as upset stomach, gas, and diahrrea.
Chamomile can be used topically for skin conditions, mouth ulcers resulting form cancer treatments
Chamomile flowers are used to make teas,liquid extracts, capsules, or tablets
Chamomile can be applied to skin as a cream or ointment and also as a mouth rinse
Side effects of chamomile if used with coumadin it may cause an increase in bleeding
Warnings of chamomile do not take if you get an allergic reaction to plants in the daisy family such as ragweed and daisies
Echinacea there are 9 species of echinacea that are native to the U.S and Cananda
The most commomnly used species of echinacea is echinacea purpurea and it is the most potent
echinacea is used to treat cold's, flu's, and other infections. It stimulates the immune system to help fight infections
The stems, leaves and flowers and roots of echinacea are used fresh or dried( to make teas), squeezed ( to make juices, extracts, and external preparations)
Warning of echinacea are Do not use if you have MS(MUltiple Sclerosis), WBC disorders, Collagen disorders, HIV/AIDS, autoimmune disorders, and TB
Feverfew originally native to the Balkin Mtns of Eastern Europe. It is a short bush with daisy like flowers
Feverfew is used to treat fevers,headaches, stomaches, toothaches, insect bites, infertility, problems with menustration and labor during child birth. Recently have been used for migranes and RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis)
We most commomnly use the leaves of feverfew. but we also use the stems. It comes in tablets,capsules,and liquids
Side effects of feverfew are No serious side effects have been reported. Canker sores, loss of taste, and swelling of th e lips and gums
Warnings of feverfew are do not use if you are pregnant because it may cause the uterus contract and increase the risk of premature labor or miscarriage
Ginseng Asian ginsengis native to China and Korea. We also have Panax and American ginseng
Ginseng is used to improve th ehealth of people recovering from illness, increasing the sense of well beingand stamina, erectile dysfunction, hepatitis C, symptoms of menopause, improving both mental and physical performance, also lowered glucose and controling blood pre
The root of ginseng is dried and used to make capsules, tablets, extracts, teas, and as well as creams and other preparations for external use
When ginseng is taken by mouth it is usually well tolerated. Some sources limits use to 3 months becasue of the side effects
Side effects of ginseng are headaches,gastrointestinal,trouble sleeping
Asian ginseng can cause breast tenderness, high blood pressure,but the products have not been analzyed No medication ineractions have been proven
Warnings of ginseng are Asian ginseng may lower blood sugar, this have been seen more in people with diabetes and should use extra caution especially if they are tasking meds to lower blood sugar and other herbs as bittermelon, finugreek that is also used to lower blood sugar
Golenseal this plant grows wild in the U.S and actually endangered because of over harvesting. It is also grown commercially across the U.S especially in the Blue Ridge Mtns
Goldenseal is used to treat SKIN DISEASES,ULCERS,AND GONORRHEA. More recently it has been used for colds and other respiratiory tract infections, infectious diahrrea, eye infections, and vaginitis. Occassionally used as a cancer treatment
Goldenseal can be applied to wounds,canker sores,used as a mouthwash for sore gums, mouth, and throat
The roots of goldenseal are dried and used to make teas, liquid extracts, and some solid extracts that may be made into tablets and capsules
Goldenseal is often combined with echinacea in preparations that are intended for colds
Warnings of goldenseal are Do not use if you are pregnant or breast feeding.Berberine can cause the uterine to contract resulting in premature labor or miscarriage. Berberine is also transferred in breast feeding to the infant causing liver problems. Should not be given to infants
Milk thistle a flowering herb relative to the mediterranean region. It has been used for thousands of years for various ailments and liver problems
Milk thistle is believed to have protective effects on the liver and improves its function. Especially used for liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) and gallbladder problems
Treatment claims of goldenseal include lowering cholesterol levels, reducing insulin resistance in type II diabetes who have cirrohsis, reducing th egrowth of cancer in breast,cervical, and prostate
Silmarin is extracted from the seeds of milk thistle and it is the active ingredient
Milk thistle seeds are used to make extracts, capsules and infusions(strong teas)
Side effects of milk thistle are it can produce allergic reactions to people who are allergic to the daisy family. It has been reported to have a laxative effect, bloating, diahrrea, and upset stomach
St.John's Wort a palnt with yellow flowers. It was used in Ancient Greece and the name comes form St.John the Baptist. It blooms in late june around the feast of ST.John
St. John's Wort have been used to treat mental disorders and nerve pain.Also has been used as a sedative, and a treatment for malaria
St. John's Wort can be made into a balm for burns, wounds, and insect bites. Today it is used for depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders
The flowering tops of St.John's Wort are used to prepare teas, tablets, and extracts
Side effects of St. John's Wort are it may cause photosensitivity. other side effects are anxitey, dry mouth, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, headahce or sexual dysfunction
Research shows that St. John's Wort interacts with some drugs such as antidepressants, BCP's,cyclosporin(which prevents body from rejecting transplanted organs), digoxin(which strenghtens heart muscle contractions), indinavir( and possibly other drugs used to control HIV infection),irinotecan(and posssibly other drugs used
to treat cancer), warfarin and related anticoagulants
Warnings of St.John's Wort when combined with certain antidepressants it may increase side effects such as nausea, anxiety, headache, and confusion
Valerian is a plant native to Europe, Asia, and North America.It has been used as a mediscinal herb since Ancient Greece and Rome
Valerian's therapeutic uses was known described by Hipicrates(father of medicine). In the 2nd Century Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia
Valerian has been longed used for sleep disorders, anxiety, and pain. Also for irregular heartbeat, headache, deprtession, and trembeling.
Side effects of valerian are No known interactions with other meds. Valerian is safe for short periods of time(continuously from 4 to 6 weeks), but can be used for long periods of time( just being used sparingly)
Side effects of valerian on the morning after you use it are dizziness, headaches, upset stomach, and tiredness
