What is Herbal Remedies the use of medicinal purposes they use only what they need of the plant to make medicines to treat what they have wrong with them.
History of Herbal Meds used as long as we had records in medical history by Asians, Native Amer...
Many synthetic meds came from herbs and plants
Lanoxen and Digoxin comes from plants & herbs , its a foxglove and cures the dropsy/chf. The digestal from the foxglove is what works to cure the dropsy.
Asa (asprin)comes from Willow bark.
FDA does'nt monito herbal remedies
Who are the experts in Herbal meds naturalopathic, or homeopathic doctors who specialize in herbal meds.
6 Dosage forms Avail in Herbal Meds tinctures, extracts, tab/cap, teas, lozenges,and oint/salves/rubs
tinctures boil herbs, process w alcohol(liquid form) ex. St.John Wort
extracts boiled left as a liquid or put in a gel cap.
tab/cap dried and crushed or mixed w/other ingredients so they can be compressed into a tablet.
teas leaves and flowers dried crushed and put in boiling water and made into tea. ex. chamomile tea
lozenges herbs boiled pressed into a mold to make lozenges so you can suck on it. ex. zinc lozenges
oint/salves/and rubs before drying and press, you get all of the liquid out of it.(like squeezing a lemon) then process them int oint.,salves, and rubs ex. arnica oint.
Common Plants used in U.S. Aloe Vera, Bilberry, Chamomile, Echinacea, Feverfew, Ginseng, Goldenseal, Milk Thistle, St.John's Wort, and Valerian
ALOE VERA PLANT 300 specieces of aloe, and is the most common in the U.S.
Parts used and common uses inside of leaf-gel-like jelly light green color. Burns, bruises, wounds EXTERNALLY. INTERNALLY used for constipation, digestion(aloe vera juice)
Interactions and Side effects anticoagulants(coumidin), because of not knowing how much vit.K is in the aloe vera plant that will effect the coumidin
WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!!! not many, but if youre allergic to the aloe vera plant family, do not take.
BILBERRY used for 1000yrs in Europen meds. GROWS in N.Amer,N.Asia, and Europe. It looks like a blueberry and the berries are used as blueberries, jams pies, etc...
Parts Used and Common Uses fruit part as berries and are used for diarrhea, menstral cramps, eye problems, varicose veins, venous inconsistence(not returning blood from legs to heart, like its supposed to)and othe circulatory problems.
The leaves of the plant is used for diabetics.
Interactions and Side effects None known or proven. Side effects could occur if used with anticoagulant theory, circulatory system.

CHAMOMILE looks like a weed flower and grows in the wild. Used in Adults and children for 1000's of yrs.
TWO TYPES OF CHAMOMILE German and Roman. German is used in the U.S.
Parts Used and Common Uses INTERNALLY it's a relaxer, insomnia, antiphyscotic, upset stomache, gas, and diarrhea. EXTERNALLY(topically) skin conditions and mouth ulcers caused by chemo cancer treatments.
Parts Used flower(top) USED to make teas,liquid extracts, tab/cap, and oint or as a mouth wash
Interactions w/ coumidin cuz it can increase the risk of bleeding.
WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you may be allergic to chamomile if allergic reactions to daisy family, ragweed,daisies,marigolds,carsantamoms.
ECHINACEA a species of Echinacea all native to U.S. and Canada
Parts Used Echinacea pup urea(purple colored flower) MOST POTENT. everything above ground, roots, and all are used fresh or dried to make teas, squeezed to make juices, extracts or externally preps(oint or gels).
Commonly Used to treat colds, flu, other infections believed to system late the immune system to help fight infections.
Interactions if allergic to daisy family, or if you have asthma.
WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not reccom. for people w/ MS(multiple sclerosis), WBC disorder,collagen disorder,HIV/AIDS,auto immune disease,TB(effects the lungs), because it may cause further damage to ur immue system.
FEVERFEW Orig. native to Balkan Mountain of E. Europe. A short bush w/ daisy like flowers. Now it grows all throughout Europe, S.Amer,N. Amer.
Does it have to be processed? Not all the time , you can pick it and chew it. After you wash it.
Parts Used dried leaves and sometimes the flower and stems. Cap,Tab,Liqu. and extracts.
Commonly Used for fevers, headaches,stomache aches,tooth aches,menstration problems,infertility, and labor during childbirth. RECENTLY for migraine headaches and RA
Side Effects no serious have been reported. Canker sores, swollen tounge, and numbness of the lips, loss of taste.
Interactions None
WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! women who are pregnant should not take cuz it can make the uterus contract increasing the risk of miscarriage and premature delivery, allergic reactions to it before. Plus if ur allergic to the Daisy family.
GINSENG Asian Gins. native to China and Korea used by various medical practices.
3 types of Ginseng Asian(TRUE GINSENG), American Ginseng, and Panax
Parts Used only the root is used. root is dried and used for tab/cap,teas/extracts,creams and other preparations for external uses.
Common Used erectile disfunction, pple recovering from illness, increases the sense of well-being and stamina,and improves mentle and physical performances, Hep C, symptoms related to menopause, lower blood glucose, and controlling BP.
Side Effects po Ginseng is well tolerated but should be limited to 3 mths b/c side effects trouble sleeping, stomache aches, and gastrol problems.
Asian Ginseng allergic reactions allergic menstral irregular reaction, breast tenderness,high BP assoc. w/ AG. Theses products were not analized, may have been from other drugs or herbs used in AG.
Interactions none proven
WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AG lower blood glucose, don't use if diabetic. pple w/ diabeties use AG w/ extra caution especially when taking other meds... like BETERMELON or FENUGREEK. Both of these meds lower blood glucose.
GOLDENSEAL grows in U.S. and is endangered cuz of over harvesting.Now it grows in green houses and farms commercially in Blue Ridge Mountains, TN.
Historically Native Amer. used for various health conditions: skin disease,ulcers,gonorrhea, RECENTLY: colds,and RTI(respitory tract infection), infectious diarrhea, eye infections,vaginitis(inflamation or infection of Vagina)
IN CANCER: as a treatment. It can be applied to wounds and canker sores, used as mouthwash(for sore gums and throat)
Parts Used roots are dried to make teas or liquid extracts. solid extracts are made into tab&cap.
Goldenseal is combined w/ what? and why? Echinacea in preparation for colds. GS is safe for short term use in adults in recommended doses.
Side Effects rare N&V but drug interactions have not been reported.GS may cause changes in the way the body process the drugs, and could potentially increase the levels of blood.
WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Women if preg. should avoid the use of GS because of the BERBERINE in the meds that can come through the breast milk.
Berberine causes the uterus to contract and may cause misscarriage or increase the risk of premature labor. It also causes life-threatning problems in the nursing infant.
Who can take Goldenseal? Adults only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MILK THISTLE flowering herb native to the Mediterian region, been used for 1000's yrs for liver problems and various health conditions. Believed to have protective effects on: liver cirrhosis,chronic Hep(inflammation of the liver) and gall bladder problems.
MT Tx INCLUDE: lowers cholestorol,reducing insulin resistance in pple w/ type 2 diabetes,w/ cirrhosis,and reduces growth of cancer cells in: Breast, Cervical, and Prostate.
Parts Used Sillymarin(extracts from seed/fruit of the plant) is the active part of the plant. Seeds are used to make cap,extracts, and infusions(strong teas.)
Side effects laxative effect, upset stomache, and bleeding effects.
Interactions/WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MT can produce allergic reaction commonly to pple allergic to the daisy family.
