Earth Motions

QuestionAnswer
How many degrees is Earth tilted on its axis? 23.5
What are the two basic Earth motions? Rotation and Revolution
The spinning of Earth on its axis is called rotation
How long does one rotation take? 24 hours (1 day)
What is revolution? The Earth's path around the sun
How long does one revolution take? 365.25 days
Name 2 reasons the Earth has seasons. 1. THE EARTH IS TILTED!!! 2. The Earth revolves around the sun
When the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun we are experiencing what season? SUMMER
What is the date of the Summer Solstice for us? June 21
On our Summer Solstice where are the sun's rays shining directly overhead? The Tropic of Cancer (23.5 N)
Is the Summer Solstice our longest day or our shortest day? LONGEST!!!
Are the sun's rays the highest in the sky on the Summer Solstice or the lowest in the sky? HIGHEST
How many hours of daylight does the North Pole receive on June 21? 24!!
When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun we are experiencing what season? WINTER
What is the date of the Winter Solstice for us? December 21
On our Winter Solstice where are the sun's rays shining directly overhead? The Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 S)
Is the Winter Solstice our longest day or shortest day? SHORTEST!!!
Are the sun's rays the highest in the sky on the Winter Solstice or the lowest in the sky? LOWEST
How many hours of daylight does the North Pole receive on December 21? ZERO
Name the dates of the two equinoxes. March 21 and September 21
What is equal on the equinoxes? All locations on earth receives 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night
Where are the sun's rays shining directly overhead during the equinoxes? The equator
If we are experiencing summer in the Northern hemisphere.... what season is the Southern Hemisphere experiencing? Winter. They are always the opposite of us.
Are we closer to the sun in the summer? NO!!!!!
Why is it warmer in the summer? (2 reasons) We get the sun at a more direct angle. We get more hours of sunlight.
Do we ever get the sun directly overhead in New York State? Nope!!! We are too far from the equator.
Day and night are caused by Earth's rotation
Neither hemisphere of the earth is tilted towards the sun during the EQUINOXES
If the Earth were tilted MORE on its axis, what could we expect to occur? More severe seasons
The Earth rotates at a rate of ___________ degrees per hour. 15 (15 degrees per hour X 24 hours = 360 degrees)
There are times throughout the year when the poles receive 24 hours of daylight. How come it is still cold there during those times? Because the sun they are getting is at a very LOW angle. (Low in the sky)
What is the name of the force that keeps the Earth in orbit around the sun? GRAVITY!!
Why can we see the moon? It reflects the sun's light.
How long does it take the moon to revolve once around the Earth? One month
What moon phase looks totally black? New moon
What moon phase is totally lit up? (totally "white") Full moon
MAKE SURE YOU CAN LOOK AT A SERIES OF MOON PHASES AND PREDICT WHAT COMES NEXT. ALSO, KNOW YOUR SEASONS PICTURE!!
