Term | Definition |

culture | The socially communicated behaviors, beliefs, values, knowledge, and other traits that characterize a particular time period or community. |
dialect | A subset of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary that is spoken and understood by individuals from a certain area. |
discrimination | The treatment or consideration based on class or category, rather than on individual merit. |
ESL | English as A Second Language instructional programs seek to teach English to students who do not speak English as their first language (L1). |
ethnicity | Distinct national, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage share in common by a sizable group of people. |
gender bias | Possessing different views of female versus male competencies, often favoring one gender over the other. |
gender differences | Psychologically and socially controlled differences between women and men; how people express their gender in behavior. |
minority group | Traditionally, a group smaller than the group representing the dominant culture; now, usually refers to people from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds. |
multicultural education | Education that exposes students to the values and norms of different cultures in an attempt to show the students the diversity that characterizes the human experience. |
sex differences | Biologically controlled difference between women and men |
SES | Socioeconomic status is a measure of a person's social class level based on his or her income and educational level |
standard English | The variety of English most widely accepted as the spoken and written language of educated speakers in formal and informal contexts, and characterized by generally accepted conventions of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary |
additive bilingualism | A situation in which a second language (L2) is taught in addition to a relatively well-developed first language (L1) |
subtractive bilingualism | A situation in which elements of a second language (L2) replace the elements of the first language (L1), resulting in decreased cognitive function |
bilingual education | Education that to a greater or lesser extent takes place in more than one language |
dual immersion | Bilingual education programs which include native English-speaking students and native speakers of a particular foreign language, where students are taught elements of both languages. |
