Maladaptive Behavior The primary cause of neurosis is the continual repetition of certain common irrational ideas.
Two words to identify irrational beliefs "awful" and "should"
"awful" signals an unrealistic exaggeration (things are unfortuante or unpleasant, but they are rarely awful)
"should" suggests a person's desire has been translated into an unrealistic demand or need
Therapeutic Goals is to replace the individual's irrational thoughts, ideas, and verbalizations with rational, healthy ones
Behavior is a chain of events A,B,C - A is the external evant to which the individual is exposed, B is the thought the individual has in response to A, and C is the emotion or behavior resulting from B.
Techniques added D & E; where D is the therapist's attempt to alter the individual's irrational ideas and E is the alternate thoughts and beliefs resulting from D
