Maladaptive Behavior | The primary cause of neurosis is the continual repetition of certain common irrational ideas. |
Two words to identify irrational beliefs | "awful" and "should" |
"awful" | signals an unrealistic exaggeration (things are unfortuante or unpleasant, but they are rarely awful) |
"should" | suggests a person's desire has been translated into an unrealistic demand or need |
Therapeutic Goals | is to replace the individual's irrational thoughts, ideas, and verbalizations with rational, healthy ones |
Behavior is a chain of events | A,B,C - A is the external evant to which the individual is exposed, B is the thought the individual has in response to A, and C is the emotion or behavior resulting from B. |
Techniques | added D & E; where D is the therapist's attempt to alter the individual's irrational ideas and E is the alternate thoughts and beliefs resulting from D |
