| protagonist | the main character; leading person or hero in play, novel, movie, etc. |
| antagonist | a person who opposes or goes against another person |
| thrive | to grow or develop successfully: to flourish or succeed |
| survive | to remain alive; to continue to function, succeed, etc. in spite of something |
| gist | what something is mainly about;the essential part of something |
| vagrant | a person who has no place to live and no job who wanders from place to place and asks people for money (begs) |
| depression | a period of time in which there is little economic activity and many people do not have time |
| figurative language | language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation |
| personality | the set of emotional qualities, ways of behaving, etc., that makes a person different from other people |
| component | one of the parts (such as a system or mixture) : an important piece of something |
| contrast | to compare (two people or things) to show how they are different |
| tone | the feelings a narrator has toward a character or subject in the story |
| mood | using words and descriptions to create a particular feeling in the reader |
