The skin needs what in order to survive? water and oxygen
The skin is prone to more than: 1,000 common problems, all fall into 9 basic categories.
The most common skin problem is: a rash
Epidermis contains what & is responsible for what? contains melanocytes & is responsible for the color of the skin. It is also the thinest layer of skin.
The dermis is & contains what? dermis is the middle layer & contains fibroblast. It is responsible for regulating body temp.
What do fibroblasts do? produce proteins and collagen & elastin.
subcutaneous layer is is what? hyperdomous, inner most layer & contains adipost (fat) tissue
Acne is inflammation of the skin caused by increased activity of subcacous glands.
Subcaceous glands: moisturize hair & is toxic to certain bacteria, occurs during puberty or hormonal changes.
Common meds for acne are: benzoyl peroxide=topical, tetracycline=oral antibiotic, zithromax=inj.
Fungal Infections-most common: most common fungal infection is candidiasis thrush(inside mouth) or vaginal yeast infection. Ex. jock-itch same thing as atheletes foot [tenapedis]Meds for fungal infections are: GoldsBond/bluestar=topical
Common Treatment for Fungus: Lotrimin Ultra,Mentax(butenafine)-crm.Lamisil AT (terbinafine)-crm.Lotrimin (gyne-lotrimin(clotriaazole)-top./supp.(mycelex)trache(clotriamazole)-oral troche
3 Categories for fungus: #1 systemic mycoses-fungi infects entire body (intern. or extern.) or in more than 1 area, can cause death.#2-cutaneous skin & places where you have mucus. Ex. mouth, lips, around eyes, top of penis, vulva, perianal
puritis is itching meds are: antihistamine, your body release the chemical histamine when you have an allergic reaction.
urticaria is hives, which produce systemic wheals [the red spots]
atopic is on top of the skin, only 1st of top layer.
photosensitivity is caused by many medicines, which make you sensitive to light. Sunburn easily.
phototoxicity is when exposed to light it becomes toxic to the cells.
Examples of meds that cause phototoxicity All ACE inhibitors, corticosteroids, antibiotics-Grifuluin(griseofuluin), All Quinolones(cipro-ciprofloxacin), Sulfa Antibiotics-(SMZ-TMP), TCN's-tetracycline antibiotics, Anti-depressants-clomipramine, maprotiline, Zoloft (sertraline)
Contd. TCS's(tricyclic antidepressant, antihistamines-cyproheptadine, benadryl(diphenhydramine), antipsychotics-geodon, cardiovascular-amiodarene, cardizem(dilitazem) Zocor(simvostatin), Betapace(sotalol)
Dermatitis=rash=inflammation of the skin (red) Ex. poison ivy/oak. crms. are usually used to treat wet oozing lesions. eczema=blistering, oozing, red, itchyointments= [bactroban]
4 eczema FDA has approved 2 meds: atopic treatment=Elidel (primecrolimus) mild-moderate eczema. protopic treatment=tacrolimus severe eczema oint.
Psorisis is a chrnoic non contagious. Skin cells reproduce rapdily & also die quick but do not fall off causing patches(red). Caused by genetics, injury, or emotional stress. Amevive(alefacept)-im iv remicade(infliximab)-iv Enbrel(etanercept)sc inj raptiva(efalizumab) sc inj q wk oral elide(pimcrolimus) 20-30 mg po bid
shingles, herpes, chicken pox, cold sores, & warts caused by the same virus: epsteinbarr virus. treated by antivirals (acloyvir) zoviraxorally, top., or iv
Cold Sores abreve (docosanol)(antiviral-like agent)herpes simplex 1=cold sores
Mites use humans as host, lice & scabies inhibit human body.lice are wingless insects, live on various animals. *contagious .
Burn Types thermal-heat/fire, boiling h20. chemical-acids/bases(bleach, insecticides).electrical-plugs, current. friction- harsh rubbing of skin, road rash, dermabrasion. sunburn-sun.
1st degree2nd degree 1st- limited damage to epidermis (red, pain) superficial burn.2nd-dam. 2 epidermis & dermis(red blister mild-mod. edema pain. mod burn)
3rd degree4th degree 3rd- destruction of epidermis, dermis, & subcutaneous tiss. (leathery, dry white, blk or cherry, no blistering, critical burn)4th- total destruction of all skin tissue , muscle, tendons, ligaments, and bones. critical to fatal in natural.
Rule of 9's head 9%chest abdomen 18%upper/mid/lower back & buttocks 18%each arm 9%each leg 18%froin 1%
Precancerous & skin cancers Actinic keratosis- precancerous condition resulting from over exposure to sun. basil cell cacrinoma- most common skin cancer. slow growing, rarelly metastasizes, Over the road truck drives are commonly known for this.
contd. keratoacanthoma-an epithelial tumor that 1st grows rapid but usually regresses & heals.melanoma-malignant cancer forms from melanocytes, sunburn increases risk.squamous cell carcinoma- most rapid growing cancer. metastasis is uncommon.
Skin cancer Tx: retinoid compoundshydrocortisone, lidocaine aloe gel & vitamin A, C, E also used.
