TermDefinition
Vegan Avoids all animal products including dairy and eggs
Vegetarian Avoid eating any animal flesh
Halal Means “permissible” according in Islamic Law. Animals must be slaughtered a correct way and some animals are not to be slaughtered.
Lacto-ovo vegetarian Avoids animal flesh but diet can include eating dairy products and eggs
Lacto vegetarian Avoids animal flesh. Eats dairy, but avoid eggs
Gluten free Avoids foods that contain wheat, rye, barley or oats
Dairy free Free from milk-based ingredients
Chrones disease Chronic (long-term) inflammatory disease of the bowel (intestines). It primarily affects the small and large bowel, but can occur anywhere in the digestive tract. Christchurch has the highest reported rates in the world (17 in every 100,000)
Food allergies Exaggerated immune system response to a food protein and the body triggers a reaction. Symptoms can include hives, itching, swelling, vomiting, diarrhoea and nausea. In some cases epi-pen needed if life-threatening.
Epi-pen Auto-Injectors that you use right away when you have an allergic emergency (anaphylaxis).
Diabetes Result of the body not creating enough insulin to keep blood glucose (sugar) levels in the normal range.
Freegan People who attempt to live an ethical lifestyle by reusing trash including possible dumpster diving for food.
Paleo Diet- proteins for strong muscles,bones, immune function; fruits/vegetables for vitamins, minerals; healthy fats - nuts, seeds, avocados, olive-fish oil and meat. Avoid dairy, grains, alcohol and sugar; eat un- processed foods and raw where possible.
Best before date You can still eat foods after the date as they should be safe but they may have lost some quality.
Use before date Must be eaten before a certain time for health or safety reasons
