TermDefinition
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
Liquid Substance that has a definite volume, but takes the shape of its container; Its particles move more freely than a solid
Solid Substance has a definite shape and a definite volume; Its particles are closely packed together and vibrate against each other.
Gas Substance has no definte shape or volume, and fills up any available space in its container and takes the shape of it's container; Its particles move fast and freely.
Atoms The individual particles that make up matter, are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons; The "building blocks" of matter.
Molecules Particles of matter that are two or more atoms joined together.
Property A characteristic or feature of a substance or object.
Physical Properties Properties of matter than can be observed and measured. (Ex. Color, shape, magnetism, state of matter)
Compound A type of molecule that is made of atoms of different elements (Example: Water)
Mass The amount of matter in an object; Stays the same.
Volume How much space an object takes up; Stays the same.
Element A pure substance made from a single atom.
Density A physical property of matter that determines if an object will float or sink; How tightly packed together the matter inside an object is.
