PPs of Matter Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume). |
| Liquid | Substance that has a definite volume, but takes the shape of its container; Its particles move more freely than a solid |
| Solid | Substance has a definite shape and a definite volume; Its particles are closely packed together and vibrate against each other. |
| Gas | Substance has no definte shape or volume, and fills up any available space in its container and takes the shape of it's container; Its particles move fast and freely. |
| Atoms | The individual particles that make up matter, are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons; The "building blocks" of matter. |
| Molecules | Particles of matter that are two or more atoms joined together. |
| Property | A characteristic or feature of a substance or object. |
| Physical Properties | Properties of matter than can be observed and measured. (Ex. Color, shape, magnetism, state of matter) |
| Compound | A type of molecule that is made of atoms of different elements (Example: Water) |
| Mass | The amount of matter in an object; Stays the same. |
| Volume | How much space an object takes up; Stays the same. |
| Element | A pure substance made from a single atom. |
| Density | A physical property of matter that determines if an object will float or sink; How tightly packed together the matter inside an object is. |
| Conductor of Electrical/Thermal Energy | A material that allows heat/electrical energy to pass through. |
| Insulator of Electrical/Thermal Energy | A material that stops or slows heat/electrical energy, and does not allow it to pass through. |
