| Term | Definition |

| Repetition | Repeating words, phrases, or story elements to help people remember something. |
| Alliteration | When the beginning sounds of words are repeated in a line of poetry or a sentence. Example: "Pristine palm trees were planted by the pier." |
| Imagery | Describing things using words related to the five senses. Example: "If you put your hand in the icy water, your hand bones would ache and your hand would burn." (Feeling Imagery) |
| Metaphor | Comparing two unlike things without using "like" or "as." Example: "The road was a ribbon of moonlight." |
| Symbol | Something, usually a physical object, that stands for something else, such as an idea or quality. Examples: A turkey is a symbol of Thanksgiving; a lion is a symbol of courage. |
| Personal Narative | A writer tells about an experience in his or her own life, using first person point of view. |
| Abolitionist | Someone who fights to end (abolish) slavery. |
| Oral Traditions | How a group of people with NO written language preserve history, beliefs, and traditions. |
| Mnemonic | Devices to help people remember things. These include repetition, rhyme, alliteration, and even dance. |
| Totem | An object from nature or a familiar animal chosen by an individual or group as a symbol. |
| Folklore | The stories, beliefs, and traditions of a community or group. Fairy tales and urban legends are types of folklore. |
| Traditions | Practices, behaviors, and celebrations that have a special meaning to a cultural group. Holidays are a form of tradition. |
