Bile Acid Sequestrants

Mechanism of Action 1. Bind bile --> excreted in stool (watch for color change) 2. Prevent cholesterol reabsorption in small intestine (Decrease motility)
Therapeutic effect 1. Decrease total cholesterol 2. May affect individual types (HDL, LDL, etc)
Precautions 1. Decrease GI motility 2. May bind other drugs
Contraindications 1. Biliary or bowel obstruction 2. Phenylketonuria (PKU) people with missing enzyme
Side Affects Works in the stomach---> stomach problems *constipation *nausea *abdominal pain
Nursing Actions 1. Follow lipid profile 2. Caution when other drugs given concurrently
