| Mechanism of Action | 1. Bind bile --> excreted in stool (watch for color change) 2. Prevent cholesterol reabsorption in small intestine (Decrease motility) |
| Therapeutic effect | 1. Decrease total cholesterol 2. May affect individual types (HDL, LDL, etc) |
| Precautions | 1. Decrease GI motility 2. May bind other drugs |
| Contraindications | 1. Biliary or bowel obstruction 2. Phenylketonuria (PKU) people with missing enzyme |
| Side Affects | Works in the stomach---> stomach problems *constipation *nausea *abdominal pain |
| Nursing Actions | 1. Follow lipid profile 2. Caution when other drugs given concurrently |
