5 major classes of Diuretics
Osmotic diuretics: EX: Osmitrol ( mannitol)Mannitol is currently the only osmotic diuretic on the market
Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor : EX: Oretic ( hydrochlorothiazide)& Diurel (chlorothiazide)
Loop diuretics: EX: Bumex ( bumetanide) & Lasix ( Furosimide)
Potassium sparing diuretics: Aldactone ( spironalone) & midamor ( amilorde)
osmotic diurectics are highly effective in the treatment of cerbal edema and primaraly used for this purpose
carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are used to treat gluacoma & epilepsy & to lesson the effects of high altitudes on the body
Thiazide & thiazide-like diurestics are mainly used for treatment of HTN
Loop diuretics are commonly reffered to as "high-Ceiling" diuretics. In high doses can increase urine output ASTRONOMICALLY, leading to severe hypovolemia & death. They are drugs of choice (DOC) in treatment of pulminary edema
potassium sparing diuretic are used in the treatment of edema associated with CHF, cirrosis of the liver and Kidney disease.
