Most common form of contraception in the US oral
Oral contra. usually consist of combos of ESTROGEN & PROGESTRONE derivatives to prevent pregnancy.
Oral contra. are avail. that contain only Progestin. POPs (Progestin Pills Only)
POPs have slighty higher failure rate than the combo BCPs. EX. Micronor (norethindrone)
Oral contra. should be d/c at least 4 wks prior to surgical procedure.
Why should oral contra. be d/c ? to prevent the risk of Post operative thromboebolic complications.
Pregnancy usuaally continue. ? 38 wks after conception.
What should Post menopausal pts. who are on long term estrogen theropy be given and why? Progestin to prevent endometrrial hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma.
Progestin SHOULD NOT be given to women who had had a HYSTERECTOMY
Main indications in MEN for ANDROGEN THEROPY to supplement low levels of testosteroneto correct hypogonadism of cryptochidismto increase sperm production in cases of infertility.
Main indications in WOMEN for Androgen Theropy Pelliative treatment of Metastatic Breast cancerfor treatment of postpartum Breast engorgment, endometrios, and fibrocystic breast dissorder
What can the use of Testosterone during pregnancy cause Masculinization of the fetus, especially if Testosterone (Androgen) Theeropy is used during the 1st trimester.
Androgen Theropy is also used to stimmulate increased production of ? RBCs
In estrogen theropy, can both genders use it? Yes
Estrogen theropy In women: who have had their ovaries removed during the reproduct. yrs.
Estrogen theropy in older women for the prevention and treatment of osteoperosis
Estrogen Theropy in men is used as a Palliative theropy for breast and prostate cancer
Estrogen Theropy is contraindicated in Women with breast cancer, pregnancy, and lactation

THIAZIDE AND THIAZIDE-LIKE DIURETICS are mainly used on the treatment of HTN (HYPERTENSION)
LOOP DIURETICS are commonly refered to as "HIGH CEILING DIURETICS"
In high doses loop diuretics can increase urine output astronomically, leading to severe hypovlemia and DEATH.
What is the DOC (drug of choice)in the treatment of pulmonary edema loop diurects
Loop Diuretics are used in treatment of HTN when other diuretics and antihypertensives don't produce a satisfactory response.
Osmotic diuretics are highly effect. in the treatment of cerebral edema and are primarily used for this purpose. CEREBRAL EDEMA=swelling of the brainvery temp. sensitive-must stay in small oven.86-96'F
Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors are used to treat glaucoma and epilepsy and to lessen the effects of high altitudes on the body.
(K)Potassium Sparing Diuretics are used in the treatment of edema associated w/CHF, cirrhosis of the liver and kidney disease.
