Oral contraceptives usually consist of combinations of estrogen and progestrone derivatives to prevent pregnancy
Oral contraceptives are available that contain progesterone(progestin) only. these are also known as POPS "Progestin Only Pills"
POPS have a silghtly higher failure rate than the combination BCP's. Example of POP Mironor(norethindrone)
Oral contraceptives should be discontinued at least $ weeks prior to surgical porcedures to reduce the risk of post operative thromboembolic complications

1Urinary bladder serves as a reservoir for urine
1 Urethra conveys urine form the urinary bladder to the outside of the body
5 major calsses of diuretics osmotic diuretics, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, thiazide and thiazide like diuretics, loop diuretics and potassium sparing diuretcis
osmotic diuretics ex. Mannitol. Mannitol is currently the ONLY osmotic diuretic on the market. Osmitrol (Mannitol)
Carbonic Anhydrase diuretics Ex. Diamax(acetazoleamide), neptazone(methazolamide)
Thiazide and thiazide like diuretics ex. Oretic (hydrochlorothizide) HCTZ, and Diurel (chlorothiazide)
Loop Diuretics ex. Bumex (bumetanide) and lasix (furosemide)
Potassium sparing diuretics ex. Aldactone(spironolactone) and Midamor(amiloride)
Osmotic diuretics are highly effective in the treatment of cerebral edema and are primarily used for this purpose. Must be kept in warm oven or a t room temp @86 degrees F- 98 degrees F
Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors are used to treat glaucoma and epilepsy and to lessen the effects of high altitudes on the body
Thiazide and thiazide like diuretics are mainly osed in the treatment of HTN
Loop Diuretics are commonly referred to as "high ceiling diuretics". In high doses loop diuretics can increase urine output astrnomically, leading to severe hypovolemia and death. They are the drugs of choice(DOC) in the treatment of pulmonary edema
Loop diuretics are used in the treatment of HTN when other diuretics and antihypertensive DO NOT produce a satisfactory response
Potassium sparind diuretics are used in the treatment of edema associated with CHF, cirrhosis of the liver and kidney disease
Hypovolemia low volume of blood
UTI urinary tract infection
BPH Benign Prostatic Hyerpasia
Hyperplasia is an abnormal enlargement of the prostate gland. This is the most common medical condition occuring in older men. primarily treated with alpha blockers ex. Uroxatrol(alfuzosin)
