Most common form of contraception in the U.S. is oral contraceptives
Oral contraceptives usually consist of combinations of estrogen and progesterone derivatives to prevent pregnacy.
Oral contraceptives are avalible that contain progesterone (progestine) only. These are called "POP's" Progestrone only pills
POP's have a slighly higher failure rate tham the combination BCP's
Oral cointraceptives should be discontinued at least 4 weeks prior to surgical procedures, to reduce the risks of post operative thrombaembolic complications
Pregnacy usually continues 38 weeks after contraception
Post-menaposal patients who are on long term estrogen theropy should also be given progestin to prevent endomential hyperplasia & endometrial carconama
Progestin should NOT be given to women who have a hysterectonmy
Andogen Theropy
Main indications of Men: To supplement low levels of testosterone to correct hypogonadism or cytptorchidism & increase sperm production in cases of infertilily.
Main indications in womem: Palliative treatment of metastic breast cancer, for treatment of post-partom breast engorgment, endometriosis, and fiborcystic breast disorder
The use of testosterone during pregnacy can cause masculization of the fetus, especially if used in the first trimester
Androgen Theropy is also used to stimualate increased production of RBC's protein synthesis & muscle mass
Athletes may use angrogens to improve athletic performance.. This Is ILLEGAL!!!!
Estrogen Theropy
Estrogen is used in both genders, including replacment estrogen theropy in women who have had their ovaries removed during reproductive years.
In older women for prevention and treatment of ostioperosis and pallative theropy for breast cancer & prostate in men.
Estrogen theropy in Contraindication in women with breast cancer, pregnacy and lactation.
