Male sex cells: sperm
Female sex cells: Oocytes (eggs)
Male sex hormones are called Androgens. Most abundant: testosterone
Female Sex Hormones are estrogens & progesterones. Most abundant estrogen: Estradiol
Puberty the age when an individual becomes reproductively functional.
The chief drugs that affect the male reproductive system are androgens & anabolic steroids
HRT hormone replacement therapy
BCP birth control pills (oral contraceptive)
GnRH gonadotropin releasing hormone
FSH follicle stimulating hormone
LH lutenizing hormone
Most common form of contraception in the U.S. is oral contraceptives
Oral contraceptives usually consist of combinations of estrogen and progesterone derivatives to prevent pregnancy
Oral contrceptives are available that contain Progesterone (progestin) only. these are known as POP's "Progestin Only Pills"
POP's have a slightly higher failure rate than the combination BCP's Example of POP- Micronor (norethindrone)
Oral contraceptives should be discontinued at least 4 weeks prior to surgical proceedures. to reduce the risk of post operative thromboembolic complications
Pregnancy usually continues for 38 weeks after conception
Post-menopausal patients who are on long-term estrogen therapy should also be given progestin to prevent endometrial hyperplasia & endometrial carcinoma
Progestin should NOT be given to women who have had a hysterectomy
Androgen Therapy:
Main indications in men: (1)to supplement low levels of testosterone (2) to correct hypogonadism or cryptorchidism and (3)to increase sperm production in cases of infertility
Main indication in Women: Palliative treatment of metastatic breast cancer, for treatment of post partum breast engorgment, endometriosis, and fibrocystic breast disorder
*The use of testosterone during pregnancy can cause masculinization of the fetus, particularyly if testosterone (Androgen) therapy is used during the 1st trimester*
Androgen Therapy is also used to stimulate increased production of RBC's protein synthesis & muscle mass
Althetes may use Androgens to improve Athletic performances (This is Illegal)
Estrogen Therapy:
Estrogens are used in both genders, including replacement estrogen therapy in women who have had their ovaries removed during the reproductive years. In older women for the prevention & treatment of osteoporosis, and as palliative therapy for breast and prostate cancer in men.
Estrogen Therapy is contraindicated in women with breast cancer, pregnancy and lactation.
