Figurative Language

allusion when an author makes reference to another person, place, thing, or idea
cliche a phrase that is so overused it is not considered good writing
oxymoron two opposite words that make up a new meaning
analogy comparing the relationship between words
personification giving non-living objects living qualities
hyperbole an exaggeration in writing
simile using like or as to compare two ideas
metaphor comparing two ideas without using like or as
alliteration repeating the beginning consonant sound of words in a sentence
idiom an expression that has a different meaning than the literal one
connotation the feelings or context associated with a word
denotation the dictionary definition of a word
