| point of view | the narrator's position from which the story is told |
| tone | how the author feels about the topic he is writing about; his attitude |
| mood | how a story makes the reader feel |
| figurative language | writing that appeals to the senses or has special meaning |
| pun | a play on words; like making a joke |
| allusion | when an author makes reference to another person, place, thing, or idea |
| cliche | a phrase that is so overused it is not considered good writing |
| oxymoron | two opposite words that make up a new meaning |
| analogy | comparing the relationship between words |
| personification | giving non-living objects living qualities |
| hyperbole | an exaggeration in writing |
| simile | using like or as to compare two ideas |
| metaphor | comparing two ideas without using like or as |
| alliteration | repeating the beginning consonant sound of words in a sentence |
| idiom | an expression that has a different meaning than the literal one |
| connotation | the feelings or context associated with a word |
| denotation | the dictionary definition of a word |
