Regents-Focused Figurative Language and Literary Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words. |
| Allusion | an indirect reference to something with which the reader is expected to be familiar. |
| Assonance | repetition of vowel sounds |
| Characterize | to describe the typical traits of someone or something |
| Flashback | A recall of events from the past |
| Foreshadowing | the use of hints and clues to suggest what will happen later in a plot |
| Imagery | language that appeals to the senses |
| Irony | the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning |
| Symbolize | to stand for or represent |
| Oxymoron | when two words are next to each other that have opposite meanings, but they create a new meaning (jumbo shrimp) |
| Tone | the author's attitude toward the subject |
| Theme | the main idea or meaning of a text |
| Personification | giving human qualities to animals or objects |
| Hyperbole | conscious exaggeration used to heighten effect. |
