| Neuron | Specialized cell in the nervous system that receives and sends messages |
| Dendrite | Part of the cell that contains the nucleus and keeps the entire cell alive and functioning |
| Axon | Fiber attached to the soma; carries messages to other cells |
| Gial cells | Serves as a structure where neurons develop and work, holding the neuron in place |
| Myelin | Fatty substance around shaft of axons, providing insulation and a protective sheath |
| Diffusion | Process of ions moving from high concentration to areas of low concentration |
| Receptor sites | Proteins that are on the surface of each cell |
