plasma | an ionized gas consisting of positive ions and free electrons |
temperature | the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object |
pressure | the continuous physical force exerted on or against an object by something in contact with it |
volume | the amount of space that a substance or object occupies |
atomic motion | the continual movement of atoms and molecules |
molecular motion | The movement of molecules in a object. |
pure substances | substances that are made of only one type of atom or only one type of molecule |
elements | A substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances |
compounds | A substance consisting of atoms or ions of two or more elements that are chemically bonded together |
mixtures | a combination of two or more pure substances in which each pure substance retains its individual chemical properties |
solutions | A type of homogenous mixture in which the particles of one or more substances are distributed uniformly throughout another substance |
suspension | a heterogeneous mixture in which solute-like particles settle out of a solvent-like phase some time after their introduction |
colloids | a mixture in which one substance of microscopically dispersed insoluble particles is suspended throughout another substance |
physical properties | any property that is measurable |
physical changes | Any change that occurs without altering the chemical composition of a substance |
chemical property | a property or characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition or identity of the substance is changed |
chemical change | a usually irreversible chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of the atoms of one or more substances and a change in their chemical properties or composition |
phase change | a change from one state to another without a change in chemical composition |
absolute zero | the lowest temperature that is theoretically possible |
gas | an air-like fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity. |
