| figurative language | language that communicates ideas beyond the ordinary or literal language of words |
| imagery | descriptive language that portrays sensory experiences in the mind of the reader |
| personification | giving human characteristics to non-human things |
| perspective | a position from which something is considered or evaluated |
| point of view | perspective from which events in a story are conveyed to the reader |
| simile | comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as" |
| style | the way a writer uses language to establish mood, images, and meaning in a text |
| symbolism | use of people, places, or objects to represent ideas or qualities beyond the literal sense |
| synonym | a word that has meaning identical or very similar to another word |
