| hastened | happening faster or sooner, hurried |
| notations | a system of written marks or signs used to represent something such as music, mathematics, or scientific ideas |
| bewildered | totally confused |
| confiscated | officially took private property away from someone, usually as a punishment |
| ruse | a clever trick used to deceive someone |
| accomplice | a person who helps someone such as a criminal to do something wrong |
| preoccupied | thinking about something a lot, with the result that you do not pay attention to other things |
| intimidating | making you feel worried and not confident |
| evidently | used to say that you have been told that something is true, apparently |
| condiments | a powder or liquid, such as salt or ketchup, that you use to give a special taste to food |
