Unit 2 Vocabulary

| anchor | the person who delivers the news story from the studio |
| feature (soft news) story | a story that is usually not related to a major event; it is not as time-sensitive as hard news |
| hard news story | a story that deals with formal or serious topics and events |
| on-camera reporter | the reporter who is filmed either talking to the camera or interviewing someone |
| headline | a phrase at the top of a newspaper indicating the subject of the article or the main point of a television broadcast |
| MOS (man-on-the-street) interview | an interview in which the reporter asks the opinions of the general public |
| internal conflict | a character struggles with his/her own needs, desires, or emotions (man vs. man) |
| external conflict | a character struggles with an outside force, such as another character or something in nature (man vs. man, man vs. society, man vs. nature) |
| short story | a fictional narrative that presents a sequence of events, or plot, and that deals with a conflict |
| figurative language | a word or phrase that creates a comparison for the reader; the most common examples are metaphor and simile |
| plot | the sequence of related events that make up a story; a plot involves characters and a central conflict |
| exposition | events at the beginning of a story that give the reader background information needed to understand a story |
| rising action | major events that develop the plot of a story and lead to the climax |
| climax | the turning point or the high point of a story |
| falling action | events after the climax of a story but before the resolution |
| resolution | the outcome of the conflict of a story, when loose ends are wrapped up |
| characterization | the methods a writer used to develop characters; for example, through descriptions, actions, and dialogue |
| dialogue | conversation between characters |
| theme | the main idea or message; it is the author's comment on the conflict of the story |
| rhetoric | the art of effective communication using four main devices: diction; syntax; tone; and imagery |
| diction | a writer's or speaker's choice of words |
| syntax | sentence structure |
| tone | a writer's or speaker's attitude towards a subject |
| imagery | descriptive or figurative language used to create word pictures; created by details that appeal to one or more of the five senses |
| monologue | the speech of one person, or character; the first-person pronoun "I" is always used |
