Atlas Mountains Series of mountain ranges in northwestern Africa, running southwest to northwest.
Caucasus Mountains Mountain system and region lying between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
Arabian Peninsula "Island of the Arabs." Arabia peninsular region located in the southwestern corner of Asia.
Persian Gulf "Arabian Gulf." Shallow marginal sea of the Indian Ocean that lies between the Arabian Peninsula and southwestern Iran.
Sinai Peninsula Triangular peninsula linking Africa and Asia.
Anatolia "Asia Minor." The peninsula of land that constitutes the Asian portion of Turkey.
Dead Sea "Sea of Death" and "Salt Sea." Landlocked salt lake between Israel and Jordan in southwestern Asia.
Caspian Sea World's largest inland body of water. Lies east of the Caucasus Mountains and to the west of the steppe of Central Asia.
Aral Sea A once-large saltwater lake of Central Asia.
Nile River Longest river in the world. Rises south of the equator and flows northward through northeastern Africa to drain into the Mediterranean Sea.
Tigris River One of the two main constituents of the Tigris-Euphrates river system.
Euphrates River Longest river in southwest Asia. One of the two main constituents of the Tigris-Euphrates river system. The river rises in Turkey and flows southwest across Syria and through Iraq.
Sahara Largest desert in the world. Fills nearly all of northern Africa.
Rub' al-Khali "Empty Quarter." Vast desert region in the southern Arabian Peninsula, constituting the largest portion of the Arabian Desert.
Kara-Kum Sandy region in Central Asia.
Gulf of Aqaba Northwestern arm of the Red Sea. Located between Saudi Arabia and the Sinai Peninsula.
Strait of Hormuz "Strait of Ormuz." Chanel linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
Aswan High Dam Rockfill dam across the Nile River, at Aswan, Egypt.
