| Idiom | a group of words that create a phrase that means something different from the individual words (e.g. rain cats and dogs; see the light ) |
| Simile | the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox ) |
| Hyperbole | exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally (this bag weighs a ton). |
| Alliteration | the same sound at the beginning of a word that is repeated multiple times (Big black bug bled black blood). |
| Metaphor | the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind with out the use of like or as ( You're a ray of sunshine on a cloud day) |
| Personification | human characteristics given to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form (the fried chicken called to me). |
| Onomatopoeia | the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (e.g., cuckoo, sizzle, boom, splat ). |
| Oxymoron | a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g., faith unfaithful kept him falsely true ). |
