Force | a push or pull on an object |
Net force | combined forces on an object |
Unbalanced forces | forces acting on an object that aren’t balanced |
Balanced forces | forces acting on an object that are balanced |
Newtons | units to measure force |
Friction | a force where two surfaces exert one another |
Static friction | friction that acts on objects that aren’t moving |
Sliding friction | friction when two solid surfaces slide against each other |
Rolling friction | when an object rolls against another object |
Fluid friction | when a solid object moves through a fluid |
Gravity | a force that pulls objects towards each other |
Mass | the amount of matter in an object |
Weight | the gravity on an object on the surface of a planet |
Free fall | when the only force acting on an object is gravity |
Air resistance | a type of fluid friction that acts on object flowing through the air |
Projectile | an object that is thrown |
Compression | an elastic force that squeezes or pushes |
Tension | an elastic force that stretches or pulls |
Inertia | an object’s tendency to resist change in motion |
Momentum | the quantity of motion |
The Law of Conservation of Momentum | without outside forces, objects that interact will have the same momentum. |
Satellite | any object that orbits another object in space |
Centripetal force | any force that causes an object to move in a circular motion |
