Pre Civil War Vocab

words we need to know before in depth learning on the Civil War

TermDefinition
planters a person who owns or runs a plantation
house slaves a slave who worked, and often lived, in the house of the slave-owner (cooking, cleaning, serving meals, and caring for children, etc)
plantations an estate on which crops are cultivated by resident labor (slaves)
sectionalism loyalty to the interests of one's own region or section of the country, rather than to the country as a whole
overseer a person who oversees a plantation
secede withdraw formally from membership in a federal union
Yeoman Farmers one of a class of lesser freeholders, below the gentry, who cultivated their own land
nulify to make of no value, to cancel out
field hands a person who is hired to work on a farm
states' rights Governmental rights granted to individual states in a country by a federal constitution
