words we need to know before in depth learning on the Civil War

| planters | a person who owns or runs a plantation |
| house slaves | a slave who worked, and often lived, in the house of the slave-owner (cooking, cleaning, serving meals, and caring for children, etc) |
| plantations | an estate on which crops are cultivated by resident labor (slaves) |
| sectionalism | loyalty to the interests of one's own region or section of the country, rather than to the country as a whole |
| overseer | a person who oversees a plantation |
| secede | withdraw formally from membership in a federal union |
| Yeoman Farmers | one of a class of lesser freeholders, below the gentry, who cultivated their own land |
| nulify | to make of no value, to cancel out |
| field hands | a person who is hired to work on a farm |
| states' rights | Governmental rights granted to individual states in a country by a federal constitution |
