| peculiar | strange, unfamiliar, or a little surprising |
| putrid | very unpleasant |
| stench | a very strong bad smell, or stink |
| flinch | to move your face or body away from someone or something because you are in pain, frightened, or upset |
| murmur | to say something in a soft quiet voice that is difficult to hear clearly |
| nonchalance | behaving calmly and not seeming interested in anything or worried about anything |
| presumably | used to say that you think something is probably true |
| impressionable | someone easily influenced, especially because they are young |
| gigs | a performance by a musician or a group of musicians playing modern popular music or jazz, or a performance by a comedian |
| geisha | a Japanese woman who is trained in the art of dancing, singing, and providing entertainment, especially for men |
| ornate | covered with a lot of decoration |
