Argument vocabulary

TermDefinition
argument a reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong.
claim an assertion of the truth of something, typically one that is disputed or in doubt. State or assert that something is the case
counter claim the opposing claim
evidence the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid
credible source sources the reader can trust sources that are backed up with evidence believable or trustworthy
formal style a broad term for writing marked by an impersonal, objective, and precise use of language
thesis declares what you believe and how you intend to prove it
warrant serves to give reliable or formal assurance of something; guarantee pledge, or security
bias a particular tendency, trend, inclination, feeling, or opinion
faulty reasoning an imperfect reason a conclusion not supported by data
fallacy an often plausible argument using false or invalid information
delineate describe or portray something precisely
evaluate to judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality of; assess
inductive reasoning reasoning achieved by using a premise that may be true
deductive reasoning reasoning achieved from statements to a certainty
sound reasoning reasons that make sense and are logical
relevant evidence evidence that is closely connected to the claim It helps to prove or disprove the claim.
irrelevant evidence evidence that is NOT closely related to the claim, or does not support the claim
explicit expressed clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt
