What is significant about lake Victoria? It is the largest lake in Africa, it is the largest tropical lake in the world, and the second largest freshwater lake in the world
What are three prominent African Deserts? The Sahara, Kalahari, Libya, and Namib
What is the largest desert found in Africa? The Sahara
What is the Serengeti of Africa? A tropical grassland
Why is Victoria falls important? It is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world and is over a mile wide
What is an aquifer? An underground water reservoir. There are aquifers located beneath the Sahara desert which will sometimes create an oasis.
Where would you find a large number of migrating animals such as wildebeests, gazelles and zebras? Serengeti
What obstacles slow down or prevent economic development in Africa? lack of infrastructure, debt, political instability, wars, lack of education, "brain-drain", etc
What is the "Brain-Drain" phenomenon? The best and brightest of Africa's people leave the country in order to find better opportunities.
What is a commodity? Agricultural or mining product that can be sold on the global market
How can African nations diversify their economies? By developing new and different industries such as manufacturing
What are some diseases that African nations are struggling with? Aids, Cholera, Malaria
What is a pandemic? An uncontrollable outbreak of disease that affects a large population and geographic area.
What are two methods that have been used to combat the spread of disease in Africa? Improving health through education and providing funding for immunization/medical treatment
What was the apartheid? The separation of races that was implemented in South Africa. Whites received the best land, and had access to the best schools and hospitals.
Who is Nelson Mandela and why is he significant? Was a key leader in the struggle to end the apartheid in South Africa; later became president of South Africa during the 1990s
What are the two largest river systems in Africa? 1) the Nile 2) the Congo
What is infrastructure? Roads, buildings, ports, airports, etc
