|---|---|
| wavelength | The distance between two corresponding parts of a wave |
| vibration | A repeated back and forth or up and down motion that creates a wave |
| ultraviolet waves | Waves that are shorter than visible light waves |
| trough | Lowest point of a wave |
| transverse waves | Motion of particles is up and down at right angles |
| amplitude | Distance a wave rises or falls from its rest position |
| crest | Highest point of a wave |
| diffraction | The bending of waves around the edge of a barrier |
| electromagnetic waves | Combination of alternating electric and magnetic fields |
| frequency | Number of waves passing a given point in a period of time |
| hertz (Hz) | Wave measurement equal to one cycle per second |
| infrared waves | Waves that are longer than visible light waves |
| longitudinal waves | Motion of particles is back and forth parallel (horizontal) to the direction of the wave |
| medium | A material through which a wave travels |
| interference | Effect that occurs when 2 or more waves meet |
| wave | A disturbance that transfers energy |
| wave speed | The speed at which a wave travels through a medium |
| mechanical waves | A wave that requires a medium on which to travel |
