wavelength The distance between two corresponding parts of a wave
vibration A repeated back and forth or up and down motion that creates a wave
ultraviolet waves Waves that are shorter than visible light waves
trough Lowest point of a wave
transverse waves Motion of particles is up and down at right angles
amplitude Distance a wave rises or falls from its rest position
crest Highest point of a wave
diffraction The bending of waves around the edge of a barrier
electromagnetic waves Combination of alternating electric and magnetic fields
frequency Number of waves passing a given point in a period of time
hertz (Hz) Wave measurement equal to one cycle per second
infrared waves Waves that are longer than visible light waves
longitudinal waves Motion of particles is back and forth parallel (horizontal) to the direction of the wave
medium A material through which a wave travels
interference Effect that occurs when 2 or more waves meet
wave A disturbance that transfers energy
wave speed The speed at which a wave travels through a medium
mechanical waves A wave that requires a medium on which to travel
