| Annotate | a note of any form made while reading text |
| Writing process | five steps a writer takes to create a well-developed writing |
| Writing prompt | a statement that focuses on a topic or an issue, followed by questions |
| Informational/Explanatory | an extended response that addresses a question, problem or statement; uses facts, examples and explanations to support an answer; is based on two reading passages |
| Argumentative | an extended response that addresses a question, problem or statement; uses reasons, examples and explanations to support an answer; is based on two reading passages |
| Hook | the first one or two sentences of an essay; serves as an introduction and works to grab the reader's attention |
| Thesis Statement/Claim | a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the writer’s main point or claim (opinion); it is developed, supported, and explained with evidence and examples |
| Transition Words | words or phrases that help make clear connections between ideas and see that sentences and paragraphs flow together smoothly, making them easier to read |
| Counterclaim | stating the opposing viewpoint or argument on an issue |
| Call to Action | words that urge the reader to take immediate action |
