Defin and notes Week 2

Drugs are classified into categories based on the following considerations: 1. the chemical ingredients
* 2. the method by which the drug is used (for example, by mouth, by injection, or applied to the skin)
* 3. the organ in the body that is treated (for example: the stomach, head, eye, liver, or heart)
The Five Pregnancy Categories
CATEGORY DESCRIPTION
A No known studies proving risk or harm to the fetus have been performed (NO TEST ON ANIMALS AND NO PROBLEMS WITH HUMANS. NO NEED TO TEST IT)
B no known animal studies show risk. If animal studies have shown risk, no studies in women confirm risk. (PERFORM STUDY AND SHOWN NO PROBLEMS. IF THERE IS A PROBLEM NOT AN ENOUGH TO CAUSE ALARM)
C Animal studies show risk, but controlled studies in women have not been preformed
D These drugs may cause harm, but also may provide benefit if no other drug is available or a life-threatening situation is present. (USED TO SAVE YOUR LIFE)
X Studies show significant risk to women and fetus (SOMETHING WILL BE WRONG EX. BIRTH DEFECTS, DEATH, ETC...)
*Test on rats and mice first *side effects are reported and data compiled together to check risk factors
DRUGS NAMES
There are 3 basic names given to each drug: chemical, generic, brand(trade) name
generic name describes the active ingredient in the drug
chemical name chemical nature of the drug
BRAND (trade) name name developed by the pharmaceutical company to give the drug social and public significance
Black box warning: added to label or package insert that is outline in black (WARNING: MDD - major depressive disorder
* DRUGS are classified according to the way they affect the body. * the FDA is the agency responsible for determining the clasification of drugs.
* the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 was designed to regulate how pharmaceuticals are handled. * DEA inforces the CSA
* Pharmacotherapeutics (used for specific diseases)plays a vital role in the overall treatment of dysfuction of the body. * the goal of pharmacotherapeutics is to work in conjunction with other medical interventions to return the body's function to as close to its normal state as possible.
* Benefits out way the risk factors. * other things play a part such as diet, exercise, and surgery
Central Nervous System Agent describe drugs that treat conditions related to the central nervous system
CNS Agents Categories:
Antienxiety Drugs used to treatment of anxiety disorders or for the short-term management of anxiety symptoms.ex. alcohol withdrawal, seizures, panic disorders, and a preanesthetic for surgery.
Two subdivided Categories: Benzodiazepines and miscellaneous
Anticonvulsants or antiepileptic suppress the neuronal activity that causes seizures
Antidepressants treatment of depression, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorders), social anxiety disorders,and MDD (major deprssive disorders
Categories:
Tricyclic Compounds
Serotonin and nor epinephrine reutake inhibitors
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI)
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI)
Antiparkinson Agents used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease
Antipsychotics used to treat psychotic disorders including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, PCP-induced psychosis, psychosis/agitation in dementia, and acute porphyria. Also treatment of nausea and vomitin, tetanus.
Tourette's syndrome, acute migraines, intractable hiccups, and severe behavioral problems
Hypnotics used to induce sleep
Sedatives (tranquilizers) used to calm and quiet while causing a decrease in all reactions and emotions
Stimulants increase alertness (ex. Adoral)
Anxiety a mental state characterized by apprehension and uneasiness stemming from the anticipation of danger
Seizure a disturbance of brain activity characterized by changes in consciousness, activity, and sensation
Depression a mental state charaterized by lack of energy, feelings of dispair, guilt, and misery, and changes in sleep pattern and eating habits
