Foreign Words and Phrases

| alma mater | the school from which one graduates; "nurturing mother" |
| alpha | first, beginning |
| omega | last, end |
| avant-garde | cutting edge, new, experimental; especially in the arts |
| bon voyage | an expression of goodwill at the start of a trip or new venture; "have a pleasant trip" |
| bona fide | made or carried out in good faith; genuine, sincere |
| c'est la vie | such is life; "that's life" |
| carpe diem | enjoy the day, take the chance; "seize the day" |
| carte blanche | unrestricted power to act at one's own discretion; complete freedom |
| cause celebre | any incident that attracts great public attention |
| caveat emptor | the seller of a product cannot be held responsible for its quality unless there's a warranty; "let the buyer beware" |
| cum laude | used in diplomas to grant the lowest of three special honors for above average grades; "with honor" |
| deja vu | the feeling that something has been experienced before; "already seen" |
| du jour | 1. prepared for a particular day 2. fashionable, current; "of the day" |
| e pluribus unum | motto of the United States; "out of many, one" |
| enfant terrible | a famous or successful person who likes to shock people, or a person whose behavior is embarrassing; "terrible child" |
| esprit de corps | a feeling of pride, fellowship, and common loyalty shared by members of a group; team spirit |
| faux pas | a slip or blunder in manners or conduct; "false step" |
| femme fatale | an attractive woman who leads men into dangerous situations, a siren; "fatal woman" |
