TPACK Vocabulary

Testing for Understanding of Teaching Knowledge

TermDefinition
Technological Knowledge (TK) The way that teachers use technology in a specific content area or domain.
Content Knowledge (CK) The understanding that teachers have of their subject area.
Pedagogical Knowledge (PK) The understanding that teachers have of how to effectively instruct.
Two-Area Overlap Most teachers learn to have skills in two knowledge areas at once (overlap). For example: between TK and CK (TCK) between PK and CK (PCK) between PK and TK (PTK)
TPACK Framework Study of the relationships between a teacher's knowledge and skills in technology, pedagogy, and content.
Three-Area Overlap The goal is for teachers to have content knowledge and technological knowledge mastered at once (overlap), or pedagogical knowledge and content knowledge mastered at once (overlap). It looks like: TCK or PCK
Four-Area Overlap TPCK
Criticism of TPACK Technology is hard to balance with pedagogy and content.
Criticism of TPACK It is hard to separately define all three areas of knowledge. They tend to go with each other instead of being different areas.
Educational Technology How to improve learning by appropriately instructing students in the use of technology and/or the effective use of technology to augment a lesson.
Differentiated Instruction The method of teaching to deliberately modify lessons to address all learning styles and needs.
