| Point-of-View | The narrator's position in relation to the story being told; first person, second person, third person limited, third person omniscient, third person objective |
| Context Clues | Hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words |
| Author’s Purpose | The reason for which an author writes - to persuade, inform or entertain |
| Tone | The attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience |
| Mood | Feelings evoked in the reader as a reaction to the atmosphere around the writing |
| Theme | The moral or lesson of the story; underlying meaning of a literary work |
| Symbolism | The use of symbols to signify ideas by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense |
| Suspense | A state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen |
| Flashback | Moments identified by the author that relate to previous events |
| Foreshadowing | Clues by the author that hint to later events |
