Vocabulary

Point-of-View The narrator's position in relation to the story being told; first person, second person, third person limited, third person omniscient, third person objective
Context Clues Hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words
Author’s Purpose The reason for which an author writes - to persuade, inform or entertain
Tone The attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience
Mood Feelings evoked in the reader as a reaction to the atmosphere around the writing
Theme The moral or lesson of the story; underlying meaning of a literary work
Symbolism The use of symbols to signify ideas by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense
Suspense A state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen
Flashback Moments identified by the author that relate to previous events
Foreshadowing Clues by the author that hint to later events
