Poetry terms for 8th grade ELA
| Term | Definition |

| form | the structure of the poem; the way the poem is put together |
| stanza | groups of lines in a poem; a poem's 'paragraph' |
| speaker | the voice of the poem; the person/thing that is talking |
| traditional poetry | poems with regular rhyme and rhythm; stanzas are similar and have mostly the same number of lines |
| free verse poetry (unconventional) | no recognizable rhyme pattern or rhythm pattern |
| lyric poetry | has a melodic (song-like) rhythm, usually shares thoughts and feelings of a single speaker |
| narrative poetry | tells a story; has characters, setting, and plot |
| rhythm | the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry |
| rhyme | repetition of sounds at the END of words |
| repetition | the use of a word, phrase, line, or sound more than once in a poem (usually does not include words like the, and, a etc) |
| alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds (same letter at the beginning of more than one word in a line) |
| assonance | the repetition of vowel (a, e, i, o, u) sounds in words that don't end with the same consonant (then it's rhyme) |
| imagery | describing how something looks, sounds, tastes, smells, or feels (uses the five senses) |
| metaphor | comparing two unlike things NOT using like or as the name caller Example: The man was a lion. The road was a ribbon in the moonlight. |
| simile | comparing two unlike things using like or as Examples: She was as hungry as a horse. The stars twinkled like diamonds. |
| personification | making something that is not a person have human qualities Example - The river laughs its way through the hills. The birds screamed angrily at the cat. |
| Example of metaphor | The stars were little alarm clocks. When they came out, we knew it was time for bed. |
| Example of a simile | The rocks poked out of the earth like teeth breaking through bread. |
| Example of personification | The moon cheerfully told us that the night was perfect for a walk. |
| Example of alliteration | My sister, Mary, married a man from Manchester. |
| Example of assonance | I awoke alone with aching bones. |
| Example of rhyme | The wind blew it went right through the cow said moo I paid what was due |
